Art Nouveau Classical sterling silver magnifying glass. Made by Gorham in Providence, ca 1900. Figural frame in form of drapery-clad Athena, the goddess of Wisdom, standing on scroll and ribbon terminal with owl. Her outstretched arms support the circular frame encircled with scrolled frames (vacant) and more owls. Leaf-and-bead finial. A handy and symbolically potent desk accessory. Fully marked including maker's and retailer's (Theodore B. Starr) stamps, letter B, and no. 6883. Theodore B. Starr was in business in New York ca 1900-24.Dimensions: H 10 7/8 x D 5 1/4 in. #BS743
