    Description

    A rare, finest quality Charles Rawlings decanter, or bottle collar, with the cut out name PORT on two sides. The heavy gauge collar is cast, weighing some 53 grams. There are no visible  surface scratches or wear. The collar is fully hallmarked with a very clear C pellet R mark. Charles Rawlings was a celebrated silversmith and his labels, and those of Rawlings and Summers, are always of the finest quality. The partnership with William Summers dates from 1829, so this bottle collar dates from just before that partnership. The label is decorated with crisp gadrooning to all the edges. The collar is tapered to fit a sloped shoulder decanter, or a bottle. (See "Wine Labels, a Worldwide History 1730-2003" by Professor John Salter. Page 157 for further information on Charles Rawlings). Some of the most interesting, and possibly unique, label designs are attributed to him. Other information:
