Product Description
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver presentation trowel; an addition to our diverse silverware collection.
This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver presentation trowel has a rounded triangle shaped blade.
The anterior face of the blade is embellished with fine and impressive bright cut engraved interlacing scroll designs with an illustration depicting St Paul's Church above the engraved presentation inscription:
'Presented to Samuel Stitt Esquire of the Grange Claughton on the occasion of his laying the Foundation Stone St Paul's United Presbyterian Church. Birkenhead 6 September 1859'.
The reverse surface of the blade is plain and unembellished.
This trowel retains the original, impressive panelled handle embellished with further bright cut engraved decoration reflecting that of the border to the blade.
The handpiece is flanked with panelled collared bands encompassed with geometric design.
The bolster of the panelled handle is embellished with bright cut engraved bands of alternating quatrefoil and bead ornamentation.
Trowels with silver handles are superior and scarce to the market.
Condition
This antique presentation trowel is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in excellent condition.
The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp.
Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of the blade are all very clear; the hallmarks are deeply struck due to the superior gauge of silver.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Victorian silverware.
