Ever want a real fast put-down bike? Then start like John Mauro with a medium-fast Atlas,
tuck in a tough little STOL blower, and disguise the whole set-up to look stock.
    • In his continuing search for better per-
formance on the street. John Mauro has
owned at one lime or another most of
    the large-displacement bikes available.
    His apprenticeship at riding, handling
and tuning the big iron at first kept
pace with the evolution of machines on
the market, then outgrew it. He was not
    interested in out-and-out competition,
but wanted a highway bike that would
go . , . where he wanted and as quick
as he wanted. Last year found him on a
Norton Allas, full of high performance
goodies like a Harmon and Collins cam.
Hepolite he pistons. Webco valve gear,
and big carburetors. At the dragstrip he
could blow off anybody in his class,
turning a 13.1 El' at 103 mph. running
on street tires, and carrying lights, muf-
flers and other road equipment which he
    just didn't care to remove.
For awhile that was very satisfying,
but John was never a man suited to com-
placency. He often spent his idle lime at
the speed shop of a good friend. Frank
    Dominianni. whose daily bread came
from outfitting the auto dragsters. Back
in 1949. Frank had imported several
    hundred SCOT superchargers, primarily
for fitting to Fiats. MGs and Auslin-
Healeys. Although most of these units
were sold before being superseded by
    other equipment and improved models.
Frank still has a few on the shelf. John
    spotted them, began asking• questions,
and figured it to be an apt project to fit
    one to his Norton.
The job required the full classic rou-
tine of fiddling and experimenting. Frank
was so busy at the shop (Hi-Speed Power
    Equipment. Valley Stream. N.Y.) that
he could do little more than offer advice
and the use of his dy atmometers and
other equipment. So it was John Mauro
    who went to work.
The SCOT supercharger chosen is a
    compact unit, displacing llOOcc and
operating safely at any pressure up to...
