Newcomer to the Norton range is this 600 cc ohv single. Known as the Model 19, it is primarily
designed for side car work.
THE introduction of a new 600 cc
overhead valve machine and the
discontinuation of four models are fea-
tures of the manufacturing program
for 1955 announced by Norton Motors,
Ltd., of Birmingham.
The new motorcycle is in effect a
reintroduction in up-to-date guise of
the Model 19, which has not been in
the Norton range since 1939. It is
designed primarily for sidecar en-
thusiasts.
The four machines wihtdrawn are
the two side-valve models—the 500 cc
16H and the 600 cc "Big 4”—the rigid-
frame 500 cc o.h.v. Model 18 and the
500T competition machine. The Model
18 will continue in rear-sprung form
as the Model ES2, and the new 596 cc
single cylinder o.h.v. Model 19 will be
available in both rear-sprung and rigid-
frame versions.
Star of the Norton range is the
Model 88 Dominator de luxe, a high-
performance 500 cc vertical twin. This
machine, in common with the over-
head-camshaft International models,
employs the famous "Featherbed”
frame as fitted to the factory racing
mounts, and an improvement pioneered
through racing experience is that the
rear sub-frame is to be integral with
and welded to the main frame, giving
greater rigidity to the rear of the ma-
chine. Already renowned for beauty
of line, the Model 88 is further en I
hanced in appearance by the employ-
ment of the wide rear fender used i
with success on the standard Model 7 I
Dominator twin.
Light alloy cylinder heads are stand-
ardized throughout the range, and will
be featured on all single- and twin-cyl-
inder engines, while other modifica-
tions affecting all models include a re-
shaped handlebar, giving a more com-
fortable riding position, and boxed-in
rear number plates of an easy-clean
type.
The familiar black “Norton” tank
transfer, used without change for some
fifty years, has now given place to a
modern three-dimensional plastic med-
allion in black and silver, giving a
neat and pleasing effect.
With the exception of the "Feather-
bed”-framed machines, all models will
now be fitted with a redesigned dual
seat affording greater comfort to the
rider and blending with the modern
lines of the range, while new knee
grips improve the tank outlines.
The latest type of Amal "Monobloc”
carburetor, with integral float and
mixing chambers, is fitted to all
models, giving greatly improved com-
pensation with better acceleration, at
the same time economizing in gas
consumption.
