Rare and original, 1910’s George K. Garrett Company (of Philadelphia) Advertising Paperweight / Encased Dice / Gambling Device / Sales Stimulator.
The Paperweight is made of solid glass with the advertising text on a sheet of celluloid insert that is affixed to the back and is viewed through the thick, clear glass of the Paperweight. The Paperweight is rectangular in shape (as can be seen in the scans below) and measures approx. 4 ¼" by 2 3/4” at the base. It features a celluloid advertising sheet insert with text that reads “Don’t take chances / Use only Diamond G Products” and “George K. Garrett Co. Inc. / Philadelphia, PA. / Lock Washers, Flat Washers, Spring Stampings”. When the Paperweight is turned over the mirror backing is found.
Encased within the paperweight are a pair of dice – one is red celluloid and the other bone. Interestingly, there are also a tiny brass washer encased with the dice. This type of Gambling paperweight was used to play various games – the winner of a bet of some kind which usually involved buying a drink at a saloon or winning a monetary “pot”. Often they were also meant to be a Sales Stimulator with some combination of the dice resulting in the customer winning a free prize or a discount on merchandise.
This very rare and very attractive, heavy glass, Encased Dice Advertising Paperweight is in very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, breaks or repairs of any kind to the clear glass. The top surface has no surface scratches or abrasion. The Paperweight is clear and clean and very attractive. The celluloid sheet insert is somewhat age toned as can be seen in the scans below. The mirror on the back of the Paperweight is original but cracked and has some minor loss to the silver backing.
